Introducing New Fish

Follow these steps to minimize stress and ensure a smooth transition for your new fish!

  1. Float the Bag: Place the sealed bag containing the new fish in the tank. This equalizes the temperature between bag and tank water.
  2. Open and Add Tank Water Gradually: After about 5 minutes, open the bag and add a small amount of aquarium water into it every 5 minutes for 15–30 minutes. This helps the fish acclimate to the tank’s water chemistry.
  3. Wait 15–30 Minutes: Let the fish adjust to the water temperature and chemistry gradually in the bag.
  4. Release Fish: Gently release the fish into the tank without pouring the original bag water in.

The Albino Rainbow Shark is a visually striking freshwater fish featuring a pale white to golden body contrasted by vibrant red to orange fins. This albino colour morph retains the active nature and bold personality of the standard Rainbow Shark, making it a standout feature fish in larger aquariums.

While not aggressive predators, Albino Rainbow Sharks are territorial and require adequate space, hiding areas, and compatible tank mates. When housed correctly, they are hardy, long-lived, and engaging aquarium residents.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Adult Size: 12–15 cm

  • Body Shape: Streamlined, shark-like profile

  • Colouration: White to pale gold body with red/orange fins

  • Sexual Dimorphism: Minimal; females may appear slightly fuller

  • Lifespan: 5–8 years

Behaviour & Temperament:

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive

  • Swimming Level: Bottom to mid levels

  • Territorial Behaviour: Strong, especially toward similar-shaped fish

  • Social Behaviour: Best kept singly

Albino Rainbow Sharks will establish and defend territories, particularly as they mature. They should not be kept with other sharks or bottom-dwelling species with similar body shapes.

Aquarium Requirements:

  • Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres

  • Water Temperature: 22–28°C

  • pH Range: 6.5–7.5

  • Water Hardness: 5–15 dGH

  • Water Flow: Moderate

  • Substrate: Sand or smooth gravel

  • Aquascape: Driftwood, rocks, caves, and broken lines of sight

  • Tank Cover: Recommended

Feeding:

Albino Rainbow Sharks are omnivorous and thrive on a varied diet:

  • Sinking pellets or wafers

  • Algae wafers

  • Blanched vegetables (zucchini, spinach)

  • Frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp)

Feed once daily, offering only what can be consumed quickly.

Compatibility:

Suitable Tank Mates:

  • Large tetras

  • Rainbowfish

  • Barbs (non-fin-nipping species)

  • Gouramis

  • Fast mid-to-upper level fish

Avoid Housing With:

  • Other sharks or loaches

  • Bottom dwellers (Corydoras, plecos)

  • Slow or long-finned fish

  • Small, timid community fish

Breeding:

  • Breeding in Captivity: Extremely rare

  • Commercial Breeding: Hormone-assisted

  • Notes: Not suitable for home breeding

Special Considerations:

  • Must be kept singly

  • Territorial behaviour increases with age

  • Requires space and hiding areas to reduce aggression

  • Not suitable for small or peaceful community aquariums

Albino Redtail Sharks will aggressively defend their territory and should not be housed with other sharks, loaches, or bottom-dwelling fish with similar body shapes.
