Buddha Pods are unique natural botanicals used in aquariums and terrariums to add a rustic, organic aesthetic while enhancing the habitat’s overall health and balance. These pods are the dried fruit of the Lagerstroemia speciosa tree, also known as the Queen’s Crape Myrtle or Pride of India. Their distinct shape—resembling an open flower or lotus—is what gives them the name “Buddha Pod,” symbolizing serenity and natural beauty.

When placed in water, Buddha Pods slowly release tannins, which help create soft, slightly acidic, tea-colored water reminiscent of blackwater biotopes. These tannins not only enhance the visual appeal but also offer mild antibacterial and antifungal benefits, supporting the well-being of tropical fish and shrimp species.

Buddha Pods are ideal for tanks housing Betta fish, Tetras, Apistogrammas, Rasboras, and freshwater shrimp, as they promote biofilm growth—a valuable food source for shrimp and fry. They also make excellent natural décor, mimicking fallen seed pods found in riverbeds and forest streams.

Before introducing Buddha Pods into the aquarium, it is recommended to boil them for 10–15 minutes to remove excess tannins and ensure they sink. Once added, they can last for several months, slowly breaking down and enriching the substrate.

Apart from their functional benefits, Buddha Pods add a distinct natural accent to aquascapes. Their cup-like structure can serve as small shelters or resting spots for fish, or as platforms for placing mosses or small plants.

Size Guide: They're about (5cm) or so in diameter on average.
